Muesli and The Quarter Pounder Have a Punch-up!

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Wednesday, August 24, 2011

In a ‘Choice’ (the self-proclaimed ‘people’s watchdog’) comparison of 159 muesli products, their results came to the conclusion that many mueslis were not as healthy as they claimed to be. The results were reported as a story on Australian current affairs show ‘Today Tonight’.

This is not really news for anyone in the Health and Wellbeing industry but here was the perfect chance for Choice and Today Tonight to finally kick in the crotch the old school mentality of ‘fat free = h...

Sugar Cravings and How to They Relate to Low Energy!

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Monday, June 27, 2011
One of the main reasons we crave sugar is because of low adrenal function.
So then what are the adrenals and where are they?

The adrenals are hormone glands that sit above the kidneys.

What do they do?

•    One of the jobs of the adrenals is to release epinephrine, or as you may know it, adrenaline. This is an energy provider.
•    Also, adrenals release cortisone when inflammation is present in the body. It’s basically an illness fighter.
•    In females, the Adrenals also take the pl...

The Tricks Used to Suck You In!

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Sunday, June 19, 2011 In : Diet and Nutrition

The other day my sister bought some honey that came in a cute little bear shaped bottle. Sounds innocent enough. The bottle said HONEY in big bold letters on the front right? Well when she looked a little closer she realised that in small letters underneath the big HONEY label were the words ‘Flavoured Syrup’!

What the…? I’d never heard of honey-flavoured syrup before then. That’s just ridiculous!

One of the latest health food causing a stir at the moment is quinoa. It’s a nutritio...

Who Wants Abs?

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Nearly everyone who comes into the gym wanting a program has, amongst their list of ‘wants’, a flat stomach. Whether you can achieve a bazillion pack with gills up the side of your torso or not can depend on a number of factors including genetics. It is however possible for everyone to achieve a leaner, flatter looking stomach.

If vanity is not your motivation then at least understand that it is that visceral fat (deep fat around the gut) that is the most dangerous fat as the more viscera...

Overcoming Fatigue: Part 1

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Are you feeling sluggish and run-down? Perhaps you had a big day at the workplace, running after kids or fighting alien invaders intent on taking over the earth and enslaving mankind. If so that’s ok. Go to bed.

However, if you’re feeling tired before you’ve even had your mid-morning donut (tsk-tsk), here are a few suggestions to boost your energy.

If you don't eat much meat or any meat at all you may be feeling run-down because you're not getting enough iron, which can cause anaemia. Som...

Top 5 Gym Work-out Songs (and 5 you should avoid like you do that human sweat sprinkler)

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Wednesday, March 23, 2011

I hunched under the bar ready to hit a heavy set on the squats. I lifted and stabilised my body ready to rep my personal best. I was determined. I was focused.  I owned this! I started my descent. Nothing was going to stop me.

Except Celine Dion!

What the...?

I dropped like the Titanic as the soft strains of a pretty flute melody wafted through the air. Who the hell had lined up Celine on the gym’s stereo? Have I been punked?

Anyway, it got me to thinking afterwards about what ...

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Friday, March 18, 2011 In : Diet and Nutrition

So it’s Friday and it’s time to knock off work. You’ve worked hard all week not just in your paid employment or school studies, but also in ensuring that you have eaten healthily and exercised your body and brain. Time to splurge a little right? RIGHT!

The operative word here is ‘little’! The problem is that too often once the weekend comes we throw common sense out of the window and overload our bodies with crap food and under utilise our bodies by shutting our systems down and turn...

Vibrating Dumbbells – Do They Work?

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Sunday, February 27, 2011

I must admit that the first time I ever saw the Ad for this contraption I laughed out loud!
Unfortunately I was drinking a glass of water at the time and the resulting geyser was quite the slap-
stick moment. As I wiped the water spillage from my shirt I decided to give the infomercial a chance
to convince me. 10 minutes later, it hadn’t. I’m sorry but this thing will NOT work. Why?

1. The weight is TOO LIGHT! Seriously the thing is 2.5 pounds (about a kilo)! My 1 year old can
curl more than...

Lolly Water

Posted by Nathan Hamon on Saturday, February 19, 2011

If I were to sit down in a public place with my 1, 4 and 6 year-old children, and then feed them spoonfuls of sugar, what would be your reaction? Imagine I were to feed them 10 teaspoons of sugar each! I’m sure I would have to deal with a number of indignant glares and harsh words. I dare say that even the most liberal of parents would find something extremely disturbing about that image.

A 2005 survey showed that almost 80% of children in Western society were regular consumers of soft drin...
